would be ideal. so dust off your dancin' shoes and prepare for some
free-love-partying. these kids can rage! let me know today or give
me a call later if you're interested in dinner. oh yeah... invite

*** PARTY INVITE ***

You've been resting your hammie and going home right after your winter
league game, skipping the bar, we know all about it, don't think for a
second that you're fooling anybody. The rain is becoming less frequent,
all those emails about this team and that are floating around and the
Kezar track beckons - the new season will soon be under way. Now that
you're starting to get in shape again, don't forget those internal
organs. Kidneys and Livers need to be stretched too and your Booty needs
to practice geting down so you can keep up with Big Wreck at all the
upcoming tournament parties! You've been to all the famous season-ending
parties, isn't it time for a season opening party?

The Big Wreck All-Stars invite you to usher IN the new ultimate season
in style:

Saturday, March 23rd at TEMPEST, 431 NATOMA, BTW 5TH AND 6TH STREETS
(NATOMA RUNS PARALLEL BTW MISSION AND HOWARD) WE RECOMMEND YOU PARK
AND/OR WALK FROM THE 5TH STREET SIDE, (UNLESS OF COURSE YOU HAVE SOME
BUSINESS ON 6TH STREET ;-) Doors open at 9 - we've rented out the place
for the night and there will be some drink tickets available for the
earlier arrivals. DJ Coppershroom will be in the house.... traditional
party favors such as glo-in-the-dark body paints will be in effect. The
relatively cheap fully-stocked bar will be in full operation. Maybe
we'll play spin the bottle or have a celebrity auction.

The gorgeous Big Wreck ladies want to dance the night away with you!
They want to see SWEET party shirts, red feather boas, MCT'S CRAZY
SILVER DISCO JUMPSUIT, OZZIE'S SUPERHERO OUTFIT, A MO'POONS SOLID GOLD
GETUP... crazy dancing, naked boobs, chests, and abs (we've all seen
enough shlong, haven't we?); kissing, glitter, and unspeakable acts
performed by drunken fools.

Apple adds contact mgmt to the iPod:

The beginning of a killer app platform. As I've been saying for mths now, once you have a high volume portable/ruggedized hard drive, the world is yours.

MANAGEMENT INSULTANCY

When corporate management hires a team of outside consultants to do what it
should be doing -- deciding how best to run the company!

==> PACKET RELAY RADIO TO THE RESCUE?

At present, unlicensed wireless access - such as 802.11b, also known as
WiFi - delivers speeds measured in megabits. But 802.11b may be
short-lived - the 2.5GHz band could become so crowded that nobody will want
to go there. Wireless packet-relay networks solve the problem of multiple,
powerful, overlapping transmitters. A network of weak transmitters (with
routers attached) can send a packet a long way without unnecessarily
trampling on the spectral commons. Multiple hops replace additional
amplification. In addition, packet-relay radio networks solve the
line-of-sight problem that restricts single-hop 802.11b transmissions.

==> NOKIA MODEM WORKS WITH ***WI-FI _AND_ CELL PHONE*** NETWORKS

Nokia has unveiled a modem for laptops that can access both 802.11b (Wi-Fi)
wireless networks and cell phone networks. The PC card is the first of its
kind to couple the two different types of wireless networks, and its
introduction in the U.S. later this year is expected to spawn a flurry of
new service announcements by telecom carriers. "The plan is to have the
carriers in control of 802.11b," says an analyst with Cahners In-Stat
Group. Verizon Wireless, Cingular Wireless, AT&T Wireless and Sprint PCS
have all indicated that they plan to incorporate Wi-Fi offerings into their
mix of services, and VoiceStream already owns MobileStar, which sells Wi-Fi
access in Starbucks cafes and dozens of hotels. The Nokia device works only
on GPRS networks, making Cingular, AT&T and Voicestream the most likely
users because they already have GPRS networks up and running.

Devices/Companies to watch (from TechKnow/PopularScience):

Panasonic e.Wear Digital combo ($450). A camcorder, camera, audio player, and voice recorder in one. Equally diminutive is Panasonic's prototype photo and video player (bottom).

Kenwood Sirius radio boombox ($400 to $500). Available this fall, it offers CD-quality sound from the sky anywhere you go

Danger Research Hiptop. With this $99 device, Danger hopes to bring PDA-cellphone combos to the masses.

Moxi Digital Media Center. This nondescript black box, to be distributed by satellite and cable companies, delivers DVD-quality movies, MP3s, and Net access to any room in the house—with or without wires.

==> WEB INCHES ALONG FROM FOR-FREE TO FOR-FEE

Although the vast majority of content on the Web is still free, an
increasing number of sites are requiring visitors to pay subscriber fees
for at least some of the content they're providing. NASCAR races are no
longer offered free on the Web, and recently ABC News has ended its free
video; now CNN has decided to phase out free video clips on its news,
sports, and financial sites. The general manager of CNN rival Foxsports.com
is sympathetic with CNN's decision: "I don't think the future is too far
off where most sites will turn off a lot of the freeness. The big companies
that support Web sites are going to take a very hard look - can we afford
to continue losing $100 million to $150 million a year on this thing?"

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY: IS THE TIDE FINALLY TURNING?
(Or, is that a tidal wave on the horizon?)

We've said it before and we'll say it again, it never ceases to amaze us
how hoaxes can travel around the Internet at the speed of light, while
things that constitute a real threat to the 'net seem to sail right on by
most Internet users.

For a long time, nowhere has this been more true than with issues
surrounding copyright and so-called "intellectual property." But it seems
that at long last, the greed of certain corporate entities has become so
overbearing that these issues are being forced to the forefront of
consciousness. Personally, we don't feel it's a smart business move to
treat the demographic that comprises the majority of your customer base as
common criminals. But then, nobody ever accused anyone in the
entertainment industry of actually caring what their customers think. As
long as we buy their product, they couldn't care less if we hate their guts.

But maybe things are starting to change. For starters, PC World asked the
question, "Could making an MP3 mix of your favorite songs and recording Sex
in the City on your PC or VCR turn you into a criminal? That's exactly what
consumer advocates are warning, as Washington and Hollywood gang up on the
issue of digital copyright and piracy."

But here's the significant part: The PC World article also noted that a
hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 14 "was a coming-out
party for DigitalConsumer.org, a consumer group that aims to protect fair
use rights to save, copy, and move movies and music you own. Cofounder Joe
Kraus testified alongside representatives of entertainment firms and
technology companies [and] warned the committee of the dangers of the
overbroad and overbearing copy protection being advocated by some
lawmakers, as well as by the movie and music industry."

PC World article: Battle Intensifies Over Right to Copy

http://www.techknowtimes.com/jump/v5i11001.html

DigitalConsumer.org

http://www.techknowtimes.com/jump/v5i11002.html

As it turns out, DigitalConsumer.org isn't the only new organization that
has a bone to pick with the copyright office. Save Internet Radio! is an
organization that is attempting to save streaming audio on the Internet
from its impending death. Many folks use Internet radio and audio streams
to get them through their work day, and are understandably upset with the
notion that the greed of a few copyright holders could cause virtually all
audio streams to disappear from the Internet forever.

The Save Internet Radio! web site explains itself this way:

America's fledgling Internet radio industry continues to react in shock to
the recent Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel ("CARP") decision that
Webcasters should pay "performance rights" fees to record labels that are
so high that they are currently more than 100% of most Webcasters' gross
revenues!

The royalty rates are perceived by most observers as so high that they will
effectively kill Internet radio as an industry if they're accepted by the
U.S. Copyright Office. (The Copyright Office will decide whether to accept,
reject or modify the rates and terms set forth in the report within the
next 60 days.)

The purpose of this website is to help concerned individuals have a voice
in trying to encourage the U.S. Copyright Office to reject the CARP
recommendation -- or Congress to amend the Digital Millenium Copyright Act
(DMCA) -- in time to prevent the industry from being effectively shut down.

Save Internet Radio!

http://www.techknowtimes.com/jump/v5i11003.html

Finally, there is this odd item from the Village Voice: It seems that a
New York Post entertainment reporter was given an assignment to write about
a breach-of-contract lawsuit filed against the Walt Disney Company in 1991
by Stephen Slesinger Inc. The latter is a company that owns merchandising
rights to Winnie the Pooh, and claims it has been cheated out of millions
in royalty payments.

The Village Voice article alleges that Disney executives were so upset with
the article (which talked about court documents that revealed "that a judge
fined Disney $90,000 last year for destroying documents that might or might
not have been relevant to the case") that they used their influence with
the newspaper's management to have the reporter fired. So much for freedom
of the press!

When Disney Complains, Sack the Reporter
Who's Afraid of Mickey Mouse?

http://www.techknowtimes.com/jump/v5i11004.html

Now here's the point: The last we heard, the United States government was
still supposed to be a government "of the people, by the people, and for
the people." Yet it seems that when the subject shifts to matters of
so-called "intellectual property", the people (and what we think about all
this) are totally ignored. Only what the big corporations think seems to
matter. Well, it's about time that "we the people" let our members of
Congress know what we think about all this copyright nonsense (we'd use a
stronger word, but kids might be reading this). Check out the above
mentioned web sites and do what you can, or before long they'll be trying
to collect royalties from us for our very thoughts!

DOWN WITH THE DMCA!
By Michael Swaine

The shameful legacy of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act:

* Compact discs that can't be played in computers or even some CD players
* A visiting Russian programmer put in prison for giving a technical talk
* A magazine sued successfully for publishing a link to a Web site
* A US professor threatened when he tried to publish the results of his
research
* E-book licenses prohibiting the reader from reading the book out loud
* Click-on licenses making it a violation even to criticize the contents of
the work
* Undermining public respect for the law

Representative Rick Boucher (D-VA-9th District) has called for Congress to
rewrite this seriously flawed law. I suggest that we all let our
representatives know that we want the DMCA rewritten or repealed before it
further erodes our rights.

no time for all the details, but the new clubs + today's swing & pivot adjustments made a big difference. quite a few 100+ yrd drives (3/4 swing), contact every time (and too often with the divider ). still lots of slice too frequently, but i think i know where some more of it is coming from.

todo
- 50-50 / 50-50 at start: center weight left/right & front/back
- fingertips fingertips
- club points to the belly btn at setup
- toe up when club is parallel to the ground
- elbow in at top of backswing
- more weight transfer on strike through to follow-through

new clubs are great overall; grips are a bit narrow for my beefy paws.

hmm, not sure i dig this ui approach. interesting that in an interactive publish & subscribe metaphor, bloggers basically just become message boards. IGN/Snowball's msg board structure makes a lot more sense to me.

ooh, 2nd benefit from the stero-out connection... streaming digital audio.

one of the other things deeje doesn't get is that microsoft is a MARKETING company! they are a HUGE fucking brand.

microsoft #2 brand in the world
apple #49

http://www.businessweek.com/pdfs/2001/0132-toprank.pdf

here's one from 2000 done by interbrand & citibank:
http://www.finfacts.com/brands.htm

50% of US households have a computer. 95+% of those run Windows and multiple MSFT products. DO THE MATH.

now clearly apple is working hard to improve its brand perception and brand awareness; steve jobs deserves the majority of the credit for this, and he's done a great job since his return.

but to say that apple is a bigger brand than microsoft is lunacy. to say it's "cooler" (or has any other differentiating attributes from msft) may be true -- it all depends on the segment, and if they're receptive to that positioning & messaging.

Apple:
http://www.business2.com/articles/mag/0,1640,38555,FF.html

why is it that apple isn't able to leverage its foresight and product design skills into a more dominant position in the industry?

apple needs to learn from sony.

calJOBS, the new /required/ EDD site, blows chunks.

how, with dozens of other job sites available, could someone blow the interface so badly?!

good golf session. lots of contact. a few (like 3-5) solid, clean hits.

major issues remain... over striking, wicked hook (slice?), keeping my head down & transfering weight between legs... likely all somewhat related, heh.

funny note for the day. got back from golf/groceries, had a msg...

"hello, this is a call from san francisco community jail. this is a collect call from... [julio]... will you accept the charges."

damn, wrong number for your one call from jail. now that's a bad day!

$25 in cables later, my box is now hooked up to my system. while i hate the extra cable on the ground vs. deeje's wireless solution, the sound is very clean (depending on the source for the .mp3) with no analog/RF degradation. now i need a 100GB external, firewire card and a 24x/10x/40x cd-rw drive. 24x = 4 min CD rip.

now perhaps i ought to /do/ something today... ;p

naming conventions, formatting, album accuracy... HELL NO. it's pretty sketchy on the piracy tip... warez were better organized in the 80s.

there's such a huge opportunity hear for the RIAA members -- THEY HAVE THE CONTENT -- and copy protected CDs are absolutely the wrong direction to take things.

if the user is monitoring the blog and Refreshes, the html embedded in blog entries isn't "executed", so the remote image isn't displayed...

man, this would be a badass way to share photos

pick a template, insert pictures and text. wonder if i can do a table... wish i was good at html... lemme see here...

oh hell yes, embeddable images in my blog. THANKS OFOTO!

WELCOME Steve!

diverting my phat traffic to your blog i see? ;p

jay and silent bob strike back...

inane, but funny as shit in parts.

Oh, huh. My blog/infoblob is here.

ok, now I'm on your team.... what does my post look like?

jay and silent bob strike back

stay tuned

as it turns out, blogger has a 'settings' option. chrono vs. reverse chrono is user selectable.

what to do... what to do...

xposted from steve's blog:

i've granted you & deeje access to my blog so that you can comment... looks like only deeje's blog tech won't support it... ;p

i do hear what you're saying though... there's no context between blogs.

think DNA double helix -- nicely intersecting at key points. map it to blogs. single helix. points of contact w/ other helixes at conversation/notation inflection points.

this was the idea behind memoryvines... 'cept they were multimedia.

i now understand why blogger not maintaining session state & losing my posts is pissing me off.

blogging feels more stream of concious... more conversational sketch.

blogging should be done in the same interface as my calendar, email, todo list, etc.

it has introspective appeal... in addition to being broadcast.

blogging would be an interesting approach to project mgmt/mtg notes... continuity from start to finish vs. synergy between sessions.

interesting how many diverse uses there are from such a simple method of communication.

alright... so what i was going to say about my first blog'ing experience last night...

basically, i'm a little surprised that blogs are so "news" focused... that is, they present your thoughts in reverse-chrono order, with no settings to allow you to control it.

this makes it more difficult for a reader to have context if a "new" post references a thought started in an "old" post.... rather like coming into a movie at the 1/2 way point.

readers should have the option of having a visual aid to help them know where they left of last.

or better yet, everything new since their last visit could be presented in "normal" chrono order.

reading from the bottom up sux0r.

blogger sends your userID and password, TOGETHER, in a plain text email after you join.

bad blogger.

just did it to me again.

i now see one of the limitations i'm not going to love.

anyway, to re-write since i didn't copy...

just got off the phone w/ my old buddy ira becker. great guy. vp of strategic alliances over at e-centives.

while ira was as upbeat as ever, i have to imagine things are a little rough in that space. brightstreet acquisition (focused on coupons vs. advertising) might be a solid move.

nilo and belle marino were over there (brightstreet), at least for a while. hope they're both well!

edit: on = one. nice that editing is permitted.

oooh, now i'm angry.

i had just completed a witty analysis of blogs vs diaries. alright, it wasn't really witty, but it was profound. ;p

but now it's gone, and you're reading this in its place.

because blogger barfed on me. session timed out and it ate my post. webapps2002 = webapps1998. will html EVER advance?!

lesson: copy blog msg before clicking Post
