Datacasting makes a comeback 300Kbps over FM; 4Mbps over TV?! VOD, real-time data migration/synchronization between devices, etc. may be much closer than we think...
Russian Minister Fears Collapse of Chernobyl Shield Will I see the advent of a safe, renewable and sufficient power source in my lifetime? Nuclear certainly doesn't seem to be fitting the bill (nor does wind, solar, etc).
vegas was awesome this past weekend. i'd recommend Blue Man Group and Mama Mia without hesitation. di also taught me how to play craps; had a blast learning, playing, lossing and winning. overall, i think i was just a tad above even, though food, drinks, shows and the rest of the experience made sure the wallet was emptying rather than filling. hopefully we'll get back sometime this year, hit some clubs, mystere/O, rollercosters & pool. so much to do, can't do it all in one trip.
Motorola ships combo cable modem/Wi-Fi access point
Motorola yesterday announced a new cable modem that also functions as a Wi-Fi access point, Ethernet router, and wireless print server and firewall. The new cable modem, the SBG1000, sells for $350 and demonstrates the trend in the consumer electronics sector of using Wi-Fi as a means to wirelessly-enable home electronics devices. More and more manufacturers are building Wi-Fi into their consumer electronics offerings. Wireless is now the dominant force in consumer electronics, with mobile phones representing the largest single segment of the industry and new technologies, like Wi-Fi, driving the growth of broadband.
CDMA+WIFI for VOIP indoors, RF outdoors; more signs it's headed our way Cisco Systems is planning to ship a wireless VoIP phone for Wi-Fi networks in June. The phone -- the Cisco 7920 -- uses only 802.11b networks and is designed for use within enterprises rather than totally replacing a cell phone. Cisco, however, is also reputed to be in talks with handset makers about the possibility of adding cell phone capability to such a device, which might carry the Cisco brand. The 7920 joins Cisco's 7960 IP phone, which sits on a desk and plugs into a wired Ethernet network, and brings the added benefit of mobility around a building or campus that has a wireless LAN.
I described such a service to Deeje and Opie last year; both said they'd never use it. What will Friendster's fate be? -- Friendster Don't think dotcoms are cool? You're so wrong bricks-and-mortar breath, because the hottest site among cognoscentis is Palo Alto, Calif.-based Friendster, an invite-only community that's growing so fast its servers are straining under traffic loads. Once invited by an existing member, Friendster shows how many people are in your personal network. Since this trendster joined on March 9, that network has exploded to a mind-boggling 15,872 peeps based on just one degree of separation. It's another powerful example of the Net's peer-to-peer power.

The Economic Daily News says Quanta has begun test production of the new device, and is expecting to ship in volume during Q1 2004.
